June 2023

we are all light

The light and heat have returned to the northern hemisphere, and this month we reach the pinnacle, the solstice.

These are the days when everything feels possible, when the seeds we’ve planted have begun to sprout and grow. It always feels miraculous to me, this transition from the shadows of late winter and early spring and these days when everything is verdant and full. I am speechless when I gaze out across the lake that just a few short months ago was still frozen solid.

This season reminds me that this too shall pass. Nothing is finite, everything, everything can and will shift. Rather than finding that assurance of change to be threatening, I find it comforting.

And this is why the summer solstice, this season of light is a chance for us to grab hold of the warmth, the abundance of the earth and revel in it. Dance late into the night while the sun still hovers above the horizon, swim in the warm waters, bask in the sounds of all of nature alive and thriving.

As we approach these pinnacle moments, there is an invitation to stop, pause and look back at how far we’ve come. Often change comes in slight increments that are barely detectable to the eye, and it is only when we look back that we are able to discern the shifts that have occured.

What has changed in the last six months since the winter solstice? What about in the last year, since the last summer solstice?

How are you more or less engaged in your own creative practice?

What are abundance are you reaping now that was perhaps just a seed six months or a year ago?

How are you celebrating your own development?

And now, we play. I hope you’ll dive into this months practices with verve and playfulness.

My work is loving the world.
Here the sunflowers, there the hummingbird—
equal seekers of sweetness.
Here the quickening yeast; there the blue plums.
Here the clam deep in the speckled sand.

Are my boots old? Is my coat torn?
Am I no longer young, and still not half-perfect? Let me
keep my mind on what matters,
which is my work,

which is mostly standing still and learning to be
astonished.
The phoebe, the delphinium.
The sheep in the pasture, and the pasture.
Which is mostly rejoicing, since all the ingredients are here,

which is gratitude, to be given a mind and a heart
and these body-clothes,
a mouth with which to give shouts of joy
to the moth and the wren, to the sleepy dug-up clam,
telling them all, over and over, how it is
that we live forever.
